Staten Island is a borough of New York City, New York, United States, located in the southwest part of the city. Staten Island is separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull, and from the rest of New York by New York Bay. With a population of 491,730, Staten Island is the least populated of the five boroughs but is the third largest in area at 59 sq mi (153 km2).

当初は行く予定は無かったがたまたまドミトリーでツアーを募集してたので参加した。
ガイドについて歩くというのは実に効率が良い。迷うことも無いし、ただついて歩くだけ。
バッテリーパークから無料のフェリーが出ており、これが巨大。一度に5,000人収容可能なこのフェリーは昼間は20分おき、夜間は1時間に一本程度だが24時間運行している。ニューヨーク市というところは公共交通機関に対してプライドを持っており、自動車大国のイメージとは異なる。東京も交通機関は発達しているが基本的に「24時間営業」というのは便利だ。
そして25分ほどでスタテンアイランドに着くのだが、その間に自由の女神は見えるし、川越しにマンハッタンも見える。自由の女神を間近で見るためには12ドル払ってリバティ島に行くのだがニューヨーク出身のレニー曰くわざわざ行くほどのものでもないし、行くと一日かかると言われていた。日程的に自由の女神を見ることはないな、と思っていただけにラッキー。
なのでこのフェリーはお勧めである。
それで前述したが「ツアー（無料）に参加したのだがこのガイドが強者だった。彼は元海兵隊のジイさん（72歳）でこの爺さんと一緒に他の宿泊者たちと行動するのだがこの爺さんが実にタフ。若者たちは疲れてフェリーや地下鉄で座るのだがこの爺さんは絶対座らない。
そしてスタテンアイランドに着くとこの爺さんお勧めのピザ屋があるので食おうということに。
この爺さんなかなかおつな店を知っている。
すると爺さんはサラミとかチーズがゴッソリ乗っているピザを「二切れ」頼んでペロッと平らげていた。私は軽くマッシュルームピザを「一切れ」だけにしたがそれでも残すほどのボリュームだ。
アメリカ人だからか、海兵隊出身だからか、とにかく強者である。
帰りはまた同じフェリーで戻るのだが帰りはマンハッタンの夜景を眺めながら帰ることになるのだがこれが絶景である。
ただ、夜景はフェリー先頭のデッキで観ることができいわば「特等席」である。が！船の「先っちょ」なので風をまともに食らう。この日の気温はマイナス2度だ。夜なのでさらに冷え込み、船の先頭というところはまともに風を受ける。しかもフェリーの船体中央部分は車なども積めるように「空洞」になっており。そこを風が抜けるので飛ばされそうになる。
写真を撮ろうにも揺れるし寒いしで大変だった。三脚は全く意味をなさない。
そして25分後。また元のフェリー乗り場に着くのだが強大なフェリーがドッキングする様子は圧巻である。
「リアルホワイトベース」そんな感じ。
とにかく寒いのだが間違いなく効率の良いツアーであった。
この爺さんはツアーのあと、一時間ほど自分で車運転して帰るという。
タフだ・・・。
