マンハッタンを歩いていると日本企業の製品、看板をかなり見かける。今の時代、どこの国に行っても同じだろう。それに今さら何を言わんやという話である。
旅行者が持っているデジカメなんて99%は日本企業の製品ではなかろうか（厳密に言うところの「日本製」とはちと違う）。自動車だって日本車だらけだ。これまた先進国、途上国関係なく見かける光景だ。
そんで、ニューヨークが特徴的なのは日本の「小売業」がちょいちょい出店していることだ。マスコミでも時折取り上げられているのでご存じの方も多いと思う。ユニクロや無印良品、ブックオフなどの上場企業の他に源吉兆庵とかいう老舗の和菓子屋なんかもある。また真珠のミキモトだってある。私が知らないだけかも知れないが、なんだかんだ言ってしたたかな企業はしたたかなのだ。日本企業のグローバル化なんぞは今に始まったことではない。
小売業、特に自社製品を扱っている企業や独自のノウハウを持つ企業にとって売る仕組みやフォーマットさえ持ち出せばビジネスとして成立させやすいことは強みだ。結局日本の地方で出店するのもニューヨークに出店するのも同じことなんだろうね。これから消費が縮小傾向になるであろう国内市場で戦うより、文化や価値観に親和性のある国や都市へ行った方が効率的なのは納得感がある。バリ島なんてファミマだらけだったしさ。
もう「言葉の壁」なんて言い訳にならん時代に突入。
それでこうしたニューヨークの店舗には日本人スタッフがそこそこいる。店内の様子というのは現地スタッフもいるにはいるが日本人スタッフがいると国内で見かける光景とさほど変わらない。違うと言えばそれはマンハッタンのど真ん中にあるということくらいだ。初日に見舞われた寒さの中でユニクロで股引買ったが通貨がドルで店員さんとは英語で会話したというだけの違い。サービスレベルも他のアメリカ国内のサービス業としては優秀なレベル。
また、このなんの変哲のないレクサスの車列。だが、このトヨタの黒塗り最高級車が6台（！）並んでいる姿は圧巻の一言。こんな光景は東京でも見ない。
なんだかんだ言ってても、リコール問題があろうがやはり世界のトヨタは健在だった。
結局のところ密かに海外進出している企業はしているし、日本のメディアでは最初だけ取り上げられるがその後の経緯を報道されることがないだけで、地道に足場固めているスマートな会社は多いということを気付かされた。

今回の地震で日本の景気が不透明となり、株価暴落しているが賢い企業はすでに市場を「日本の外」に求めている。特に製造業やゲーム業界なんて売上の半分以上が海外という会社も珍しくない。
どの国、どの市場で戦うか、そういう視点で見ることができる人や企業はいつ何時でもしたたかに次の作戦を持っていると思う。
