みなさんご存知「タイムズスクエア」。俗称「世界の交差点」。
とにかく「眩しい」の一言。どんだけ電気つかっとんねん！とツッコミたくなるほどに眩しい。恐らくこの眩しさはLEDなどの光かと思うが目がチカチカする。それでやはりここは世界の観光地であり、広告の最先端を行く場所柄もあってとにかくド派手。いろんな広告やらミュージカルの看板やらで大賑わい。広大な面積の屋外看板が四隅までクッキリ光っているのはさすがである。どんな構造なのか気になる。
当然人は多い。観光客も地元の人も。完全に「観光地」であり、観光地たる演出も随所にみられる。タイムズスクエアを一望できるところが雛壇になってたり、歩行者天国になってたり。広告に関してはアメリカ企業はもちろんのこと日本企業のものもある。
それで撮っていて、まぁ面白いんだけど普通かな、と。
「旅の形」は人それぞれなので観光がメインのがほとんどだろう。ただ、私の場合は観光というよりは撮影がメインなので「撮ってナンボ」なのである。こうした視点でタイムズスクエアを撮ると「演出された場所＝楽しくない」なのですよ、これが。
以前、「at The Metropolitan Museum of Art 」でも書いたけど演出されている場所というのはなかなか難しい、というか概ね撮る場所決まっている。別に悪い事じゃないけどタイムズスクエアの写真ならもっと良い写真撮っている人わんさかいるし、あえてそこと戦う必然性も無いような。
それでこういう場合どうやって気持ちを切り替えるか、
自分も観光客の一人として満喫する♪
ことにしている。これはこれで気分が楽だ。他の観光客と同じようなところで同じような写真を撮る。ギラギラ光る看板をあんぐりと口を開けて見渡す。これほど気が楽なことは無い。写真なんてどうでもいいんだから。
そして去り際に、「ああ、人生の中であと一、二回はここ来るかもな。」と思った。
