それで何をどっから書こうかと思っているが写真もお見せしたいし、いろいろと気づきがあった。ここの読者層としてはクリエイティブよりビジネスサイドに色濃いであろうからまずはざっと駆け足で感想を書いておく。
●facebook
今回も私の一人旅では定番となったドミトリーに泊まった。世界中から来ている宿泊者たちを見ていて間違いなくfacebookを使っている。旅行者というかドミトリーに泊まるような人たちなのでSNSに対するリテラシーが高いことに違和感はなく想像通りの結果。仲良くなるとすぐ「facrbookやってるか？」そんな感じ。また、ラップトップPCを持参している旅行者が極めて多い。直感的には半数以上の旅行者ではなかろうか。これは5年前にヨーロッパ一周したときには見なかった光景だ。恐らくニューヨークは拠点を決めるスタイルの旅行だからということに起因するだろうがドミトリーのロビーやラウンジでは皆がラップトップ開けて何かしらやっている。
●電子書籍
日本よりは普及している。地下鉄に乗ると大抵2～3人はKindleかSONYの端末で読んでいる。ニューヨークの人口に比して地下鉄一車両当たりにこの2～3人が多いか少ないかと言われると難しいところだが日本よりは多いと思う。ただ残念なことに私は最近日本の地下鉄に乗っていないので普及率は分からない。ただ、全米二位のBORDERSの倒産理由の一つが電子書籍と言われているので全米的にはかなり普及しているんだろう。
●iPhone
これは多い。Android端末を使っている人を見かけなかった。電気屋にはsamusungやDELLなど売っていたが使っている光景を見かけない。ガラケーも使っている人はいるが私の印象ではiPhoneの方が多い印象。また、BlackBerryも多い。しかし、iPadを使っている人は見かけなかった。
●英語力？国際力？
英語は21世紀を生きる上で不可欠なスキルであることは疑いの余地無し。ドミトリーというところに泊まるのは各国の英語事情が分かって面白い。ドイツ人は相変わらず流暢に話し、フランス人は日本人と同等レベルかちょっと上。アルゼンチン人、ブラジル人でも話せる若者は多数いた。
それで日本人旅行者、特に学生や若者に関して今まで「英語が話せる」、もしくは「それなりに」という人物に会ったことが無い。それだけならまだしも日本人の若者は全く他国のグループに溶け込もうとはしない。これはアジア系全般に見られる現象かとも思うのだが日本人の若者はもっと積極的になれないものかね。
ホステラーたちと出かけるPub crawlingでも日本人同士固まって群れを成す。同じ日本人なので国民性というか民族性というか理解はしているがなぜここにいるのかを今一度考えて見た方が良い。すでにアラフォーと化してしまった貧乏オッサンから見てもせっかくのチャンスを台無しにしているようにしか見えないのだが。
確かに日本という国は目的地を失った「泥船」のような国だ。新卒者の就職難も問題視されている。ただ、この「就職難」に関して言うならば「英語ができるだけ」でまだまだ就職口はある。特に新卒なんてそれくらいしか他者と差別化することはできないだろう。能力なんて問うていない。英語ができるというただそれだけの理由だけで就職することができる状況だと思う。あとは「素直さ」だ。英語力と素直さが新卒で就職に困っている学生の唯一の解決策だろう。
●私（TOEIC755点）の英語力
これは酷かった。ニューヨークだからなのか、単に私の英語力の問題か？いや、疲労困憊していたからか？いろいろと反省。ほぼ通じない、というか自分のコミュニケーションスキルに課題を多数見つけた。面倒なので分かったふりして誤解を招く、20年来の課題「コーヒー」の発音がいまだにできない。ちょっと複雑なシチュエーションを説明できないなどなど。
初日にスタバでコーヒー買うのに難儀したのはかなりショック。いや、私の聞き方（＝コミュニケーションスキル）が悪かっただけと反省している。
ただ、一つだけ言い訳するとニューヨークの英語は難しいと思う。人種のるつぼであるが故にあらゆる人種の発音を聞き分ける必要があるのだがこれが実に難しい。ニューヨークはお出かけされる際にはお気を付け下さい。
●skype
今回skypeを使ってみた。プリペイドでデポジットが1,500円というのはいささか高い。WIFI環境で無ければ使えないのだが使ってみた印象としては国際電話としては格安だが、通話品質にはバラツキがある、ということ。スマホ経由で利用したのだが、まぁ通常通話で使うことを考えれば通話品質がある程度犠牲になっても許容されるレベルだろう。海外とのやりとりが多い場合は使える。今後も活用したい。
●海外パケットし放題
ニューヨークなら不要かもね。短期滞在であればSIMロックフリーの携帯使うよりも楽ではある。ただ、たまにキャリアが勝手に変わってしまい焦るし（これは端末側で設定できるらしいのだが、どうも設定がおかしい、というか分かりづらい）、実際のところ通信しても遅かったりする。
ニューヨークはWIFI環境が比較的整っているのと、今回GPSをメインに使おうと思ったがそもそもニューヨークはそんなに複雑な街ではないのでいらないかも。サービスとして存在していることを知っていれば良いレベル。
●パブ事情
三泊し、そのうち二回はホステルのイベントのPubCrawlingに参加し、一回は一人でフラフラ飲み歩いてみた。そういう意味では滞在中はずっと二日酔いであった（いつも通り？やっていることはどこでも同じ）。一人パブ巡りはまたやりたい。泊まっていたのはコロンビア大学にほど近いドミトリーだったので、callege barにも行ってみた。あくまで私の認識では；

それでさすがにコロンビア大学そばのcollege barはエリート連中のたまり場であった。あの雰囲気は東京には無い。このbarは熱気というか話題が知性に溢れている。他のbarでも同様の熱気に包まれているが、やはり場所柄知性に富んだ空気を感じた。圧倒的な人の数ながらそれぞれがキャンパスで見かけたことがあったりするのだろう。あちらこちらから挨拶している声や「あいつはどうした？」みたいな会話が飛び交う。国力の違いというか、日本では絶対にあり得ない空気感。若い頃からああいうところで酒を飲み、友達と話し、女の子を口説く、そんな連中と戦うというのは今の日本の若者には酷だろう。ふらりと言ってあの空気に触れるだけでも刺激的だ。でも、ビールすら頼めない日本の若者にそれができるのだろうか。 あの大混雑の中で人を押しのけバーテンダーに英語でビールを頼む、世界で戦うということの縮図のように見えた。
●写真
今回の一番の目的は「写真」だった。「作品作り」と言うと大袈裟だが、まとまった時間と場所で集中的に撮るというのはある意味初めての経験だ。行く先々で「こいつ何やってんだ？」みたいな顔をされ、「そんなに写真撮ってどうするの？」とか「そんなもの撮ってどうするんだ？」などなど。まー、そりゃそうだ。
そんな中でPubCrawlingに参加したときのガイドがずっと私がバカみたいに撮っている光景を見ていた。それで近づいてきて；
「俺は写真で食ってるが、お前の写真は良い。ニューヨークで食えるぞ！」
と絶賛してもらった。彼がどういう素性か知らないが、見ず知らずの人にそう言って貰えたのは嬉しくもあり収穫でもあった。彼が言うには光の捉え方とアングルが良いという。まさに私の狙いを褒められて上機嫌である。
その後言ったbarでも取り憑かれたように撮っているとbarのオーナーらしき人からその写真を店のサイトにアップロードしてくれ、と頼まれ再び上機嫌（facebookのSIPというところにアップしたのでご興味あればご覧下さい＆「いいね」を押しといて（笑））。
あと、やはり「場所を変える」とイマジネーションが刺激されるというのは事実だ。見るモノが全て新鮮だし、日本では覚醒しなかった自分のクリエイティブな部分がまだ生きてることを実感した。この感覚を再び日本でも発揮しようと思った。
とにかく三日間ひたすら歩きひたすら撮った。自分の基準で言うと撮影技術含め反省点も多々あるが、撮影手法としての収穫、表現における課題など整理された。

それでしばらくは写真をメインに載せるつもり。ただ、ここで公開する写真は諸事情あって当分「二軍、三軍」の写真たちをメインに載せることにする。また、つたないながら英語での表記を増やすことにしている。
さしたる観光をするわけでも、ミュージカル観るわけでもなく、ましてや買い物も食事もせずひたすら撮った。
今回の旅で撮影の集中力と体力の限界は三日間だということも分かった。でも気持ちはまだまだ足りてない。
