今日一日くらいは安静だと思う。これがけっこうイライラする。
それでやはり布団の上でボーッとしているのも勿体ないのでスマホでちょっと現在企画中の個人イベントについて調べていた。ちなみに日本語とか英語のサイト。

世間では「目指せTOEIC900点！」とか「はじめてのTOEIC550点オーバー！」みたいな本が多数売られているけどそれらのスコアの違いによる「実用範囲」について触れられていないと思ったので本日のお題を書いている。
なんか売ってる本ってどうも漠然としていてつまらんよね。
あのね、「モノを売る」という行為は「顧客にゴール（目的や結果ね）をイメージさせる」ことなのです。お金を払って受け取ったモノがそれに見合っているかどうかイメージさせないとなりません。

それで公称TOEICスコア755点の私ですが、実際どの程度のことができるかということを経験に基づいて書いてみます。このブログの読者層って実は英語レベルが高い人が多くていささか釈迦に説法みたいな気もしますが、最近英語の勉強始めた同士も少なからずいるのでその人たち向けに。
英語のサイトはけっこう読めるのですよ。そりゃ分からない単語もあるし読む速度も遅い（※読む速度が遅いからスコア低いんですよ）。内容によっては分からないものも多々あります。政治、経済などはやはり難しい。でも旅行サイトやwikipediaなどはそこそこ読める。ただ、日本語でも難しいものは難しいのでその辺は語学力というよりは経験や慣れ、興味の主体に依存すると思います。
あと、「文章力」について。
あまり英語の文章書く機会は無いけれど、私からLennyにメールするときは英語で書いている。彼からは最近上達めざましい日本語で返事をくれるがそれでも私は英語で書いている。
SMSレベルなので込み入った状況のものは無いのだが：
「○○料理の女将さんがホームパーティやるので俺たちに来ないか？と連絡くれたけどどうする？あいにく俺は体調が悪くて今回は参加できない。」
くらいのメールの内容であれば校正含め3～5分くらい（※ミスタイプの時間含む）。
早いか遅いか、と言われれば個人差なのでなんとも言えないが（※少なからず「早さとTOEICスコア」は相関性が極めて高い）、辞書とか別に使わなくても「まぁ、伝わっているであろうレベル」では書ける（と思う）。
正しいかどうかと言われれば間違っているかも知れない。ただ、目的は「コミュニケーション」であって「正誤性」ではない。あくまで「コミュニケーション」と割り切ればさほど失礼にならない程度の文章は書ける（書けているはず？）ということです。
この考え方は「会話」においても同じだと思っている。あまりにも正確性を追って会話のリズムが狂うよりはまず相手の言葉に反応し、間違いに気付いたら訂正する。これはコミュニケーションのコツなのでTOEICスコアに関係ない。ハイスコアで会話ができないという人はこの辺の割り切りができていないというか、むしろ日本語でのコミュニケーションもさほど上手くない可能性が高い。
一言二言喋ればこちらの英語力なんて相手に筒抜けなわけだし、相手に悪意が無い限り多少のミスや間違った表現は許容してもらえることは多い気がする。それにこんなつたない英語でも理解してくれようとする相手の配慮に対して誠心誠意言葉を尽くして伝える努力をすることも礼儀だと思う。それに沈黙してしまうほど無礼なことはない。
結局のところTOEICスコア700点というのはある程度読み書きはできるようになるが、会話力というのはまた別な次元のことであり、さほどスコアと強い相関性があるわけでも無さそうな気がする。ただ、最近企業で要求される700点以上というのは納得感がある。
私も春頃から再びTOEICチャレンジ再開する予定。
