実は流行のウォーキングに関してかなり否定的である。
運動経験や年齢などいろいろと加味すべきことはあるが少なからず健康な50歳未満であればウォーキングは運動強度として弱いと思っている。
脂肪燃焼（運動の場合）の最適心拍数は最大心拍数の65%程度と言われているが、ザックリ年代別でみると30歳代で120前後、40歳代で110前後が目安となる（※「最大心拍数＝220-年齢」らしい）。あくまで個人差があるので絶対だとは言わないがまぁ、こんなもんである。
それで個人的な経験（37歳）でこれらの心拍数に到達させ、一定時間維持するのはそんな簡単ではない。すなわち歩いたくらいではそこまでの心拍数にはならないのである。
人の歩行速度は時速4kmと言われている。一方、時速7kmを越えると「軽いジョギング」になってくる。ならば時速6km程度ということになるのかも知れないが、だったら「普段から早足で歩けよ！」、ということになる。
また、時速4kmで1時間歩くのと、時速8kmで30分走るのが同じ消費カロリーならばどちらを好むかは好みであるが、週に1、2回ウォーキングしたところで何も変わらない。やらないよりはマシでしょ？、というご意見もあるかと思うが、残念ながらダイエットに関しては；
「やらないよりマシなこと＝やっても何も変わらない」
と思っている（個人的な見解）。
ならば毎日「一駅手前で降りて歩く」ほうが良い。ウォーキングするよりは効果がある。理由は簡単で少ない距離でも毎日行う「継続性」がそこにあるからである。また、毎日30分程度の運動が健康維持に良いとされているが、毎日30分まとまった時間で運動できる人間なんてそうそういない。ならばなおさら「目的地の一駅前から歩く」ことが意味を持つ。例えば通勤時、行きに10分、帰りに10分、合計20分だがこれだけでも違う。万歩計でも買って「数値化」することも悪くない（今の万歩計は驚くほど進化しているし）。
ちなみに私はウォーキングではなく「散歩」大好き人間である。天気の良い週末などは早朝からパートナーと散歩する。ついでに朝ご飯も食べてくる。だいたい二時間ほどの行程だが、運動というよりも「気分転換」の意味合いが強い。歩いたことで消費できたカロリーはあくまで「気分転換のおまけ」なのである。
なのでとりあえず30代、40代の方には歩くよりも「走る」ことをお勧めしたい。
あくまでウォーキングは日常生活に取り入れるものであって、トレーニングメニューに組み入れるほどの運動ではない。ただ、しばらく運動していなかった人などはいきなり走ると体に良くないのでまずは「歩く」ことから始めるのは良い。久しぶりの運動前のリハビリだと思えば悪くない。
そして恐らく慣れてくると歩くことが遅く感じて結局走ってしまう。
こうしてジョギングにはまる人が多いのも事実。
